Late Assistant Commissioner of Police Balram Persaud, who died weeks after being involved in a vehicular accident, will be cremated on Sunday.
Assistant Commissioner (Administration) David Ramnarine yesterday announced the funeral plans at the opening of the Police Officers’ Annual Conference.
Persaud’s body will leave the funeral parlour at 7.30am for his residence at La Parfait Harmonie for viewing. Thereafter, it leaves at 9 am for the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary for a religious ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to last about two hours. The body will then be taken to the Ruimzigt Foreshore, West Coast Demerara for cremation at 1pm.
Just before the opening ceremony started, Ramnarine reflected on Persaud’s service to the force. A minute of silence was later observed in his memory.
Persaud passed away at the Woodlands Hospital on Tuesday, over two weeks after a vehicular accident on February 5.
Reports are that around 11pm, while in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, he lost control of his car and slammed into a nearby utility pole. He was rushed to Dr Balwant Singh’s Hospital in a critical state. He was subsequently moved to the Woodlands Hospital, where he died.
At the time of the accident, he was said to have been heading to the city to attend the Criminal Investigation Department’s New Year party.
He was due to retire later this year after giving the force 32 years of service.
