Fruta Conquerors climbed into the second position in the League Finale section of the GFF Stag Beer Elite League, downing Buxton United 2-1 on Wednesday at the Tucville Community Ground.
It was a laboured performance from the home side as goals from Jahaal Greaves and Shaquille Agard ensured the three points. On the other hand, an 86th-minute own goal resulted in the visitors opening their account.
Due to the win, Fruta Conquerors move into second position with four points while Buxton United remain in the cellar with zero.
The contest started brightly for the hosts as Jahaal Greaves directed his unchallenged header wide of the right corner, after collecting a right side corner kick in the eighth minute.
Greaves continued to be a menace to the visitors and this time was denied by the woodwork in the 17th minute, placing his first effort at the top of the box onto the crossbar, after collecting a pass from Shaquille Agard.
It proved to be third time lucky for Greaves as he grabbed the go-ahead goal one minute onward, unleashing a powerful right-foot volley from within the centre of the box into the back of the net, after collecting a headed pass from Dennis Edwards.
Agard almost made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, spinning away from his marker from within the box, only to fire his effort straight at the custodian.
On the other side, Denver Dennis nearly levelled proceedings in the 30th, unleashing a thunderous free kick from 22 yards out in the centre which forced diving custodian Derick Carter to tip acrobatically over the crossbar.
Dennis was at it once again on the stroke of half time, forcing another great save from the diving Carter to his left following a curling free kick from the former.
2nd half
The exploits of Dennis continued in the second half, unleashing a curling effort with the outside of his right boot, forcing the keeper to tip over the crossbar in the 53rd minute.
On the other end, Edwards came close to increasing the home side’s advantage in the 58th minute, volleying over the crossbar from within the right of the box after collecting a left-sided Jermin Junior cross.
Eventually the hosts doubled their tally nine minutes later as Agard scored, dribbling the onrushing keeper within the centre of the box, before blasting his effort into the roof of the net, after collecting a left-sided pass from Hubert Pedro.
However, the visitors were given a lifeline in the 86th minute as a miscommunication between the centre halves and goal-keeper resulted in a right-sided cross striking the leg of the player and into the net.
It went from bad to worse for the visitors as centre half Kevin Dundas picked up his second card of the evening.
Meanwhile, in the opening fixture, league leader Slingerz FC dismantled Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 7-1 in a top of the table clash. Action in the tourney is slated to continue on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
In the opening fixture, Monedderlust FC will oppose Pele from 18:00hrs while the feature contest will pit home side GFC against Alpha United from 20:30hrs.
