Slingerz FC maintained their position atop the League Finale section of the GFF Stag Beer Elite League, dismantling the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 7-1 on Wednesday at the Tucville Community Ground.
Vurlon Mills, Clive Nobrega, Trayon Bobb, Julian Wade, Tichard Joseph, Domini Garnett and Devon Millington netted in the 23rd, 32nd, 40th, 55th, 60th, 69th and 87th minutes respectively.
On target in the loss was Olvis Mitchell in the 67th minute. With the win, Slingerz FC moved to six points. On the other hand, the army unit remains on three points.
Mills started the rout in an emphatic manner, controlling a lobbed pass within the centre of the box with his chest before hammering a powerful volley into the back of the net.
It quickly became 2-0 nine minutes onward as Nobrega scored, racing onto a botched clearance 26 yards in the centre before unleashing a curling right-foot strike into the top right corner, giving the keeper no chance.
Bobb was next to add his name to the scorer’s sheet five minutes before the end of the half, placing his effort into the lower left corner after collecting a pass within the right side of the box.
The carnage continued 10 minutes into the second period as Wade scored with a powerful volley into the roof of the net from centre of the box, after being set up with a lobbed pass.
Joseph was next to get into the scoring act five minutes later, unleashing a thunderous strike from 30 yards out in the centre which sailed into the top right corner.
On the back foot for the majority of the fixture, GDF pulled one back two minutes later as Mitchell lashed his shot into the roof of the net from within the right side of the area.
The aforesaid goal only proved to be a brief respite for the GDF as Garnette made it 6-1, fighting off the challenge of his marker while racing into the right side of the box, before finishing past the advancing custodian into the lower left corner.
It went from bad to worse for the army men as Nigel Braithwaite was sent off in the 73rd minute after picking up his second bookable offence.
Millington then capped off the clinical performance three minutes before the end, lobbing a right-footed attempt into the right-hand corner after spotting the keeper off his line when pouncing on a botched clearance.
Action in the championship will continue today at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
Upon the conclusion of the League Finale round, the top four finishers in terms of points will face off against each other in single knockout format to decide the winner of the round.
The semi-final round will commence on May 12th while the finale and third place playoff will occur on May 23rd. The points leader will face off with the fourth placed side while the second positioned club will tackle the third positioned unit at a venue to be announced.
Winner of the League Finale round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively.
Similarly, the points leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Finale round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
The season champion will then be crowned when the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale respectively face off in a single match. That winner will then earn an automatic berth at the CFU level.
If the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale rounds are the same team, they will earn the automatic CFU spot, with the second berth going to the team with the most accumulated points in both rounds aside from the eventual season champion.
Likewise, if one team wins both sections of the championship, they will face off with an All-Star team instead of competing in a season playoff.
