A man was arrested yesterday after a failed bid to smuggle suspected marijuana to a prisoner in a holding cell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts complex.
The man, who fled after police discovered the contraband during a routine search of food items, was caught by police constables at the nearby Stabroek Market after a chase.
The incident took place around mid-morning and saw the police at the complex on high alert afterward. It was unclear how much of the suspected drug was retrieved by the police.
According to a police official, who asked not to be named, a routine check on food items the man took for a prisoner was carried out by a court orderly and led to the discovery of the suspected marijuana. Upon realising that the drugs were made out by the orderly, the man took off running pass the guard and other officers and headed towards the Stabroek Market area.
