Argentina appreciates Guyana’s support on sovereignty rights in the ‘Malvinas’

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you in reference to the article published last December 28th on the relations between Argentina and Guyana and to the existing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, entitled ‘Interesting times ahead for Guyana/Argentina relations’.

I wish to recall that the aforementioned dispute over sovereignty has been recognized by the United Nations through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2065 (XX) and subsequent General Assembly resolutions, in which the international community states have recognized that this is a special and particular colonial question, urging the Governments of the Republic of Argentina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume negotiations in order to find, as soon as possible, a peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute.

Every year, the Decolonization Committee of the United Nations adopts a resolution in the same line, the most recent one being adopted on June 25th, 2015.

Furthermore, on December 16th, 2015, the leaders of our region commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of the previously mentioned Resolution 2065 (XX), the first to deal specifically with the Malvinas Question and the first to recognize the existence of a sovereignty dispute between the two countries, which should be resolved only through bilateral negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Despite the elapsed time and the numerous resolutions adopted since then by the General Assembly and its Special Committee on Decolonization, the United Kingdom refuses to resume negotiations.

Argentina expresses special appreciation to Guyana for its valuable support to the legitimate rights of Argentina over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, representing the Argentine claim a regional cause.

Argentina gratefully acknowledges the support given by Guyana to the Argentine position when the Malvinas Question was treated by the United Nations General Assembly and within the framework of the Organization of American States General Assembly, which every year adopts a Declaration on ‘The Question of the Malvinas Islands’ in the same terms of the resolutions adopted by the United Nations.

The most recent expression of this support is the Declaration on this issue adopted by the Latin American and Caribbean Heads of State and Government (CELAC) in Quito, Ecuador, on February 4, 2016.

Moreover, Argentina greatly appreciates the repeated support of Guyana to the Argentine position on the Question of the Malvinas Islands through successive declarations of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and Associate States, the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Africa-South America Summit (ASA), the Summit of South American-Arab Countries (ASPA) and the Group of 77 and China.

Yours faithfully,
Luis Alberto Martino
Ambassador of
Argentina to Guyana
