Pele FC and Alpha United secured hard-fought wins over Monedderlust and Georgetown Football Club (GFC) respectively when the Guyana Football Federation’s Stag Beer Elite League Finale continued Friday.
In the game played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Pele FC squeaked past Monedderlust FC 2-1.
Gregory Richardson gave Pele the lead in the 35th minute, finishing past the goalkeeper following a one-on-one situation after racing onto a through pass from Travis Grant.
However, their lead proved to be a short one as the Berbicians equalised two minutes later compliments of a lobbed effort from Pierre Joseph.
Spotting the goalkeeper off his line 25 yards from goal, the veteran midfielder unleashed a curling effort which sailed over the head of the custodian and into the back of the net.
The Berbicians should have taken the lead in the 46th as a right side cross was parried onto the crossbar by the goalkeeper only for the forward to fire the resulting unchallenged effort from within the left of the box straight at the ‘keeper.
Pele re-established their lead in the 64th minute as Ronel Gordon scored compliments of a goalkeeping blunder.
Racing off his line unnecessarily to thwart a lobbed pass, custodian Alwyn McDonald failed in his attempted challenge, allowing the forward to pounce on the ball and finish into the empty net.
The Georgetown unit should have added to their lead in the 73rd minute as Gordon, upon racing to the left side of the box, denied by the onrushing ‘keeper. Meanwhile, Alpha United downed home side GFC 3-1.
The ‘Hammers’ should have taken the lead in the seventh minute as a flat left side cross found Daniel Wilson unchallenged inside the centre of the box, only for the midfielder to direct his first time effort over the crossbar.
Nonetheless, Alpha United broke the deadlock in the 17th minute as Anthony Abrams scored, slotting home into the left corner from the centre following a one on one situation with the goalkeeper, after racing onto a left side through pass.
On the other side the woodwork denied the home side from equalizing in the 28th minute as a Keiron Solomon strike from the right of the box, crashed into the left upright.
Similarly, Alpha United should have doubled their advantage in the 45th minute as Abrams was denied by custodian Sesi Norville within the centre of the box, following a one on one situation.
The visitors eventually doubled their lead in the 57th minute as Delon Lanferman scored, heading the ball from the centre of the box through the hands of the ‘keeper, after rising high to meet a right side corner kick.
GFC almost pulled one back in the 64th minute as a Welcome was denied by the onrushing ‘keeper within the right side of the box, after collecting a left side cross.
Alpha eventually pushed the score to 3-0 in the 88th minute as Lanferman sealed his brace, collecting a through pass in what appeared to be an offside position within the centre of the box, before finishing his effort the past the advancing ‘keeper into the top right corner.
GFC ultimately netted a consolation goal two minutes later as Welcome scored compliments of a left sided shot which took deflection and settled into the right corner.
Action in the event is set to continue tomorrow at the locale with another doubleheader.
In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, Alpha United will lock horns with Monedderlust FC whilst in the feature contest at 20:30hrs, Pele FC will oppose Buxton United.
