The UG Wolves men’s rugby club is not going to fly under the radar of any team in 2016.
The student ruggers have been vocal about their talent on and off the field and have hardly faltered. The Wolves are expecting every team’s best shot in the ongoing Guyana Telephone and Telegraph/Guyana Rugby Football Union 15s league, but so far it has not really mattered. The outfit improved to 4-1 with a dominating 50-nil win over the Yamaha Caribs on Saturday at the National Park.
Last time the teams matched up in the league three weeks ago, the Caribs pulled out a hard-fought 31-25 victory.
This time around, on a crisp, Saturday afternoon, things were different.
In a clean match, the Wolves quickly jumped out to a five point lead thanks to an early try by speedy winger, Ryan Dey who finished with three tries.
Soon after, they scored again, and nailed the kick for two extra points to surge ahead 12-0.
“Play boring, take it slow. We can have fun later on in the game,” said head coach Laurie Adonis.
Throughout the game, Adonis emphasized the importance of defence.
“If Caribs scores 10 on us, (my players) know that they will be running sprints for the next two weeks.”
After a little longer, the Wolves broke through the Caribs defence, taking the ball from the sideline to the center of the field on the try – an advantage for the scoring team, as it makes the ensuing kick after the try much easier to make.
The Wolves via Lance Adonis who also scored a try, converted and brought the score to 19-0.
Once again the Wolves punched in a slow, methodical drive to run the score up even more. By the half, the lead had inflated to 29-0. Godfrey Broomes (one try, three conversions), Jacques Archibald, Daniel Anderson and Skeete Roberts then added their names to the score sheet to pad the score to 50-nil.
The league continues this week at the same venue. (Emmerson Campbell)
