Those killed and injured in yesterday’s prison blaze

(The names of those who died or were injured in yesterday’s Camp Street prison blaze appear below with information on the charges that they faced.)

Dead are Sherwin Trotman, 32, of Lot 45, Section D, South Turkeyen and Kirk Clarke, 30, a labourer, of Charlestown.

They were two of three men whom it was alleged murdered Mahaica rice farmer Hardat Kissoon during a robbery at UG Road last June.

Trotman was charged with a series of other offences prior to this, the most recent being escaping from lawful custody while being a remand prisoner on a sexual offence charge. Early in 2014, he was convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody. He was also committed to stand trial at the High Court over the sexual offence.

daily5&28 2-3Both men had at different times publicly accused the Guyana Police Force of impropriety. Clarke had accused police officers of beating him while Trotman claimed that the police had attempted to seek a bribe from him.

Latchman Partap, had been accused of shooting and killing his former teenage girlfriend at Moraikobai, Mahaicony.

After over a year on the run Partap was brought before the court in 2015 to answer to the charge that he murdered Theiana Andrews in December, 2013.

Shaka McKenzie had been charged with committing a gunpoint robbery in 2014. McKenzie, had pleaded not guilty to the charge that on the May 25, 2014 in Ruimveldt, he robbed Rishi Ramdani of a silver band, a BlackBerry cellular phone and cash totalling $100,000.

Aaron Eastman, a Guyana Defence Force member who had been held last December with illegal guns and ammunition died in yesterday’s fire.

It was alleged that Lance Corporal Eastman, 27 along with Mark Anthony, 22, Andrew Davis-Hescott, 25 and Brian Hescott, 27, were carrying an unlicensed sawn-off pump action shotgun with matching rounds and an unlicensed .32 revolver with matching rounds, on December 5th, at Robb Street.

They were charged with having both the weapons and ammunition without being the holders of firearm licences. The men pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Andrew Philander was one of three men charged with the 2007 murder of Kumar Singh, called ‘Mango Man’, of Cove and John. and he was remanded to prison.

Philander of 54 Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara was on remand since 2014.

Randolph Marques, 20, was one of the two men accused of killing Patsan Trading salesman Bharrat Ramcharan during a robbery in 2014. He had been committed to stand trial last year, while his co-accused was freed.

Marques, 20, and Kevin France, had been jointly charged with murdering Ramcharan, 57, who was gunned down during a robbery in front of Patsan Trading on the afternoon of April 24th, 2014.

Rohan Teekaram was being tried in the High Court for the murder of his younger brother Jairam Teekaram.

Rohan of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was arraigned on April 25,2014 for the murder of his brother, whom he is accused of chopping sometime between April 20 and April 22 of that same year.

Hillary Amos, had been accused of murdering 25-year-old miner Fabian George. He was remanded in 2011.

The allegation against Amos is that on April 26, 2011 at Moruka River, North West District, he murdered George whom he claimed stole $50,000 from him. Amos reportedly left the scene of the fight, armed himself with a cutlass and returned and chopped George to his back. George later died.

Rayon Paddy was one of four men accused in the murder of Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) engineer Trevor Abrams.

Paddy, 27, along with Orin Arthur, 27, Steven Prescott, 44 and Urri Vanwick, 26, were jointly charged with murdering Abrams on February 27, 2015 at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara in pursuance of an arrangement whereby money was passed as consideration for the death of the deceased.

Anthony Primo was one of two men who were charged last November with two counts of armed robbery.

The charges alleged that the men, on November 3, at America Street, robbed Rayburn Fraser and Osafo Ward of $1,600,000 and $540,000, respectively, in local and foreign currency.

In October 2014, Delroy Williams, along with his brother Leroy Williams, and two others were charged with the murder of 17-year-old miner Azaad Potter, who was fatally beaten in Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro.

The prosecution’s case was that on October 21, 2014 the teenager was attacked by the four men, who relieved him of his cell phone and other valuables. Police had said Potter was allegedly beaten by a group of men who had accused him of stealing articles from their mining camp.

Clifton Joseph, also known as Smiley, was charged on September 26, 2014 with the murder of Jason Munroe, whose charred remains were removed from a burned out house at 201 Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

He had appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was subsequently remanded to prison.

It was on September 22, 2014 that neighbours heard what sounded like fighting followed by screams coming from the house. Soon afterwards they saw the house engulfed in flames and persons were seen running from the building.

Munroe who was at the time staying with his girlfriend Zullina, her 15-year-old sister Shontel and Zullina’s 3-year-old daughter, had been knocked unconscious during a fight with intruders and perished in the blaze.

Jermain Otto, 26, of Lot 735 East Ruimveldt was one of two men charged with murdering businessman Ashok Raghoo following a robbery in 2014. In July 2015 they were committed to stand trial at the High Court.

Also dead are Chetram Dwarandat, Asraf Mohamed and Richard Hubbard.

Injured were Marcellous Verbeke, Ignatius Franz and Andel Forde.

Forde was on Wednesday committed to stand trial for the killing of sex worker Noel Wilson Luthers called “Nephi”. Luthers, a resident of Lot ZZ D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, was allegedly shot and killed by Forde in the wee hours of the morning at Quamina and Carmichael streets where he usually carried out his trade.
