A Grove man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend 40 times last year April was today charged with the murder and remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on April 19, at Sophia, Shivanand Roopnarine, 22, of 478 Grove Housing Scheme, murdered Alicia McPherson.
Roopnarine, a porkknocker, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, when it was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, where the Sparendaam Magistrate’s court is temporarily being held.
Police prosecutor David Goodridge told the court that the defendant had been on the run for 11 and was finally caught by the police in Mabaruma on Friday.
According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, McPherson went to a barbecue in Sophia with another male after she had been forbidden by the accused to leave the house.
Roopnarine apparently followed the pair and stabbed McPherson 40 times about her body. Investigations are still ongoing by the police, the prosecutor later added.
Roopnarine was subsequently remanded to prison by the magistrate. His next court appearance is on April 18 for report.
