Almost seven years after the Ministry of Health main building located at Brickdam was gutted by a fire, the police yesterday arrested the third suspect, who had managed to flee the jurisdiction after being released on bail.
This was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum who told Stabroek News that Keith Ferrier called ‘General’ was arrested yesterday at North Road, Bourda at a business establishment.
Ferrier was among three men charged with unlawfully and maliciously setting the Ministry of Health’s building on fire. He was placed on bail and had subsequently fled to Venezuela.
The two other persons charged were Clayton Westford and Tedena Bagot.
During the wee hours of July 17, 2009 a huge fire, reportedly sparked by channa bombs, completely destroyed the Ministry of Health’s main building and an annex at Brickdam, devouring decades-old records, vehicles and a string of key divisions in a major blow to the health sector.
The fire levelled the offices of two ministers, permanent secretary, chief medical officer and administrative staff, the Registry, Disease Control Unit, Adolescent Health Unit, Tobacco Control Unit, Standards Department and a section of the Accounts Department.
