An Eccles mason was yesterday fined and had his licence suspended after he admitted to charges of driving under the influence (DUI) at a city court.
Amarnaught Brigemohan, 24, of 84 BB Eccles, was read a charge stating that on February 23, at Providence Public Road, he drove motorcar PSS 1266 while his breath alcohol level exceeded the limit. The defendant’s breath alcohol level was said to be at 129% and 206% of the recommended amount. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
It was also stated that on March 5, at Providence Public Road, he drove the same motorcar while his breath alcohol level was at 306% of the recommended amount. He pleaded guilty to this charge as well.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan questioned whether the nature of the charges should not in fact be drunk driving given how excessively over the limit the defendant was but no explanation was provided by the prosecution. The recommended breath alcohol level is 0.35 microgrammes.
The third charge stated that on March 5, Brigemohan drove motorcar PSS 1266 and was not in the proper position to have control of the vehicle. He denied this allegation.
In relation to the latter charge, the prosecution stated that at about 10.07 pm on March 5, the defendant was proceeding north along the western carriageway at a fast rate and in a zig zag manner. He was stopped by ranks and underwent a breathalyser test that revealed that his breath alcohol level was at 306 microgrammes. Brigemohan was placed on $5,000 bail on this charge and told to make an appearance at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on March 22.
As regards the DUI charge from February 23, Brigemohan was fined $7,500 or an alternative of three weeks in prison. He also had his licence suspended for a duration of one year in relation to the matter of DUI from March 5, at Providence.
