It has been more than a month since Ann Mohammed was struck down and killed minutes after leaving her work place at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, but no one has been charged as yet and her family is pleading with the authorities for swifter justice.
“Well I think that they are taking too long because you know it’s supposed to done come out. It’s been… a month and change, running into 40 days, and I don’t know why they taking so long,” Vinood Mohammed, Ann’s husband, told Stabroek News on Monday.
The 34-year-old woman was crossing the East Bank Highway in front of her workplace, Prairie International Hotel, when she was killed in a crash.
An eyewitness had stated that a Toyota Hilux had turned out of the yard and onto the road about a hundred feet away from where the incident occurred. While the Hilux was driving south towards Mohammed, a speeding Toyota Fielder tried to overtake the Hilux, hitting Mohammed and crashing into the Hilux.
The police had said that the Fielder crashed into the Hilux which then spun out of control, hitting Mohammed.
Vinood Mohamed said that while he has been keeping in contact with the police they have been brushing him off and sending him from place to place. “When I go, dem telling me to go there and dem gon tell me to go another place and that’s how it’s been. I deh all over trying to find out what’s going on and it’s been so long,” he added.
“It’s not a dog or cow they kill, is a human being and if the country running like this I don’t see what’s going on. In other country when people get hit down they does get charge in like two days and when I told the police that he get mad with me.”
Mohammed added that one of the drivers is still driving recklessly on the road like nothing happened. “That is bare stupidness. You does barely do something wrong and they does got you sitting down long and wasting your time and somebody died and this guy still driving. His licence supposed to get seize until the court case call,” he said.
He said that while the driver of the Hilux has to frequently check in with the police station, the driver of the Fielder is acting as if he is immune on the road, while his (Mohamed’s) children are left to cope without their mother.
“…And is not like he driving like something happen, you know. He still driving like he head ain’t good and speeding down the road all the time. Is only time until something else happen again, watch and see,” he added.
“What if he kill somebody else? How that is going to look on the part of the police?” he questioned, stating that he and the rest of his family are pleading with the authorities to hasten the investigations and charge the men.
