The Ministry of Public Infrastructure will be doing remedial works to the Supenaam stelling in Essequibo, which is currently in a deplorable state, GINA said.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson made this announcement during a visit to Supenaam over the weekend. She and Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson were at the time inspecting infrastructure in Region Two.
“Some millions were spent on the Supenaam stelling under the previous Administration and in less than 10 years of its existence, the state of the wharf is one that is troubling, and so we did the assessment, and I want to assure the citizens of Essequibo that corrective works will be done,” Ferguson told GINA.
When it was completed in 2010 for around $431m, there were major complaints about the stelling and more money had to be spent to rectify problems. In subsequent years a number of malfunctions occurred at the stelling. There was a long-running row between the then Ministry of Public Works and the contractor BK over who was to blame for the problems.
Ferguson said that the state of the facility is of great concern to the Ministry and steps will be taken to correct the defective works within the shortest possible time.
