A Sophia man was fined yesterday for hitting his wife to the head during an argument after she insisted that he watch their children so that she could go to a party.
The court heard that on March 7, at 1267 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Desmond Williams, 28, unlawfully assaulted Alicia De Souza.
Williams pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, where the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court is temporarily being held.
Police Prosecutor Shevon Jupiter told the court that on the day in question, around 11.30am, De Souza told Williams that she wanted to go to a party and insisted that he keep the children. Williams, however, forbid De Souza from leaving the house and told her that she had to stay with the children. The prosecutor added that an argument ensued between the two and the defendant slapped the complainant across her face.
Williams acknowledged that he had an argument with his wife over the children because she wanted to go out. However, he maintained that he never slapped her. Williams told the court he just “thumped” her on her head.
Williams was subsequently given a fine of $10,000 and also placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
