A woman was yesterday charged with attempted murder after she allegedly set her former husband on fire.
It was alleged that Tamica Hazel set fire to Lawrence Simon after an argument started between the two on May 2nd, last year, at North Ruimveldt.
Hazel was not required to plead to the charge, which was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.
The prosecution told the court that as a result of the argument, a kerosene stove was thrown at Simon, who caught it. However, kerosene from the stove spilled onto his jersey, after which Hazel stuck a match and threw it at him. As a result, Simon was set ablaze. He sustained first and second degree burns to his chest and upper limbs, the court heard.
Hazel told the court that she was arrested twice in relation to the matter; her latest arrest, she said, was December 1st, 2015.
The court was also made aware that both Hazel and Simon had appeared before in relation to a protection order that Hazel sought against Simon.
Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently set Hazel’s bail at $150,000 and adjourned the matter to April 1st.
