The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against Colin Alleyne, the man accused of killing elderly Montrose caretaker Danrasie Ganesh, began yesterday with the testimonies of two of the deceased’s children.
Harrilall and Basmattie Ganesh both testified at the Better Hope Community Centre, where the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court is temporarily being held. They were examined by Police Prosecutor David Goodridge and later cross-examined by Alleyne who is leading his own defence.
Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul is presiding.
The PI continues today, when three more relatives of the victim will take the stand. The prosecution has a line-up of 15 witnesses.
It is alleged that Alleyne, 23, of 77 Cemetery Road, Timehri, murdered Ganesh on August 1, 2015 at Montrose, East Coast Demerara.
Ganesh’s body was found in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the bottom flat of the two-storey Montrose house, where she had been caretaker for some time. An autopsy revealed that she died as a result of strangulation and brain haemorrhaging reportedly as a result of the severe beating she received at the hands of her killer.
The attack was caught on CCTV cameras in the house
