Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) officially launched the 11th edition of their National Schools Basket-ball Festival (NSBF) Regional Conference Champion-ships yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The event which is slated to bounce off on April 15th, will feature schools competing in divisional tourneys within their respective conferences. Upon the conclusion of the conference events, the NSBF Championships will be staged to crown a national champ.
Speaking at the launch, YBG Director Chris Bowman said the entity is focused on youth development, noting “11 years is only possible through dedication and hard work and understanding why we are doing this and we are committed to student and athlete development but we could not do it without our sponsors and supporters”.
He further said “We are grateful and privileged to do what we have been doing”, noting Guyana will be able to field a strong boys and girls team at the impending u-16 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships programmed to be staged on local shores in July.
Director of Sports Christopher Jones praised YBG for their continued emphasis on youth development while stating that the National Sports Commission will continue to support their efforts in any form possible.
Meanwhile, Marketing Director of the Beharry Group of Companies, Anjuli Beharry-Strand during a brief comment said sports is of the outmost importance because it helps children to grow and develop, declaring “more money needs to be plugged into sport because the youths are the future”.
Similarly, Banks DIH Limited Public Relations Officer (PRO) Troy Peters and Digicel Events Coordinator Luanna Abrams pledged their respective companies’ continued support of the event, declaring that the project undertaken by the YBG organisation is needed for the continued growth of the sport at junior level.
