North Georgetown (District 11) is set to run off a track meet for junior athletes at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary on March 20.
These and other details were disclosed during the launch of the event yesterday at the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) compound.
The powerhouse district which has won the National Track and Field Championships on 13 occasions, has invited five clubs and two districts to the meet which will pit the nation’s top junior athletes against each other.
It was also disclosed that the longest race will be the 1500m as the organizers aim to keep the excitement level fever pitched.
Ruralities Athletics Club, Police Sports Club, the Guyana Defence Force Athletics Club, Super Upcoming Runners and Mercury Fast Laners are the clubs competing while the two districts will be East Coast and Bartica.
Missing is Guyana’s premier track club, Running Brave.
Branch Manager of North Georgetown Mariska Williams related that Head Coach of the club Julian Edmonds, declined the invitation to participate, noting that “we do not participate where we are not welcomed.”
Williams stated that they were baffled since most of their top athletes are from the district.
Representatives of the sponsors, Courts Guyana, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Banks DIH commended the district for their initiative.
Director of Sport Christopher Jones reasoned that the event will fit in well with Guyana’s 50th Independence celebration dubbed ’50 Shade of Games’ under the NSC.
Williams thanked the sponsors onboard and revealed that she intends to make the meet annual initiative. Athletes are set to get in the blocks from 16:00hrs.
