The Cheddi Jagan International Airport Inc (CJIA) is seeking the owner of a quantity of gold jewellery that was found at the airport on December 12, 2014.
In a notice in today’s Kaieteur News, the CJIA gave no further details about the circumstances under which the jewellery was found or the amount. It is also unclear why the owner is only now being sought.
The notice said that claimants have until April 30, 2016 to make a claim and shall have to satisfy the officer as to the identity and ownership of the jewels.
Claimants are being asked to contact the Airport Duty Officer on 261-2281 or 600-7022 to make a claim.
The airport has become a hub through which gold jewellery and other raw gold has been smuggled out of the country. In recent months, the authorities have seized several pieces of jewellery believed to have been for the purposes of smuggling. The seizures have been done under the anti-money laundering legislation.
