The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will honour the three Guyanese who were members of the West Indies Under-19 World Cup team at a gala ceremony set for the club’s pavilion sometime in the near future.
This is according to DCC President and former national U19 cricketer Alfred Mentore.
West Indies U19 skipper Shimron Hetmyer, Vice-Captain Keemo Paul and Wicket-keeper/opening batsman Tevin Imlach, etched their names into the Guyana and West Indies history books by playing pivotal roles which ensured the WI U19 team emerged victorious in the limited overs World Cup competition beating India in the final of the 2016 International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 World Cup tournament played in Bangladesh.
Both Imlach and Paul are members of DCC while Hetmyer is a product of the Young Warriors Cricket Club of Berbice.
Mentore explained that he saw the need to honour the young players regardless of club affiliation adding that he intends do so at a celebration which is expected to be attended by government officials, players and among other guests.
Mentore told Stabroek Sport yesterday that plans are in motion to finalize the actual date of the event which is likely to be before the end of next week.
Finishing touches to the ceremony’s programme for the evening among other logistical aspects are in motion according to the former national U19 batsman.
Home of legendary former West Indies cricketers such as Roger Harper, Clyde Butts, Lance Gibbs and others, Mentore said that he was happy to see the two DCC players carrying on the club’s rich legacy of producing West Indies players, adding that he hopes the club can continue its culture of modelling young players for Guyana and the West Indies.
