Following a report in yesterday’s Stabroek News under the headline `Mother disgusted ten-year-old held in police lockups over the weekend” in which it is reported that a ten-year-old boy was placed in the lockups at the Springlands Police Station, Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud has directed the Police Office of Professional Responsibility to conduct an urgent investigation into the matter, a release from the police said.
The mother of the child had told Stabroek News that her son was held by her neighbours and taken to the Springlands Police Station, after it was alleged that he had stolen items.
“At the time of his arrest, I was at home. But it was after I had left to visit a relative that I was told of the whereabouts of my son,” she said.
The child later appeared in the chambers of the Springlands Court, where Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh advised his mother and the prosecutor that he was too young to be prosecuted. Thereafter, he dismissed the matter.
