Dear Editor,
Quite recently I was in conversation with a mother who was seeking help for her daughter, who was selected with six others to participate in the Carib-bean Union of Teachers, Students Track and Field Championship in July 2016. Ms Nicketa Weeks is the mother of Ms Deshana Skeete, who represented the Guyana Teachers Union at the Hampton Games in Trinidad 2013 and British Virgin Islands 2016.
I am a Lindener and I feel a sense of joy when we are included in a national squad of sports people. Miss Weeks is one of the many mothers who are walking with their children, with documents from the GTU, going from place to place, seeking financial assistance in order to purchase boots, track suits and passage, so that they can participate in the upcoming games overseas.
I’m surprised to see that in this day and age, our promising athletes such as Adessa Alberts, Ryon Joseph, Rondel Greene, Colis Scott, Jahazak Copeland and Shaquka Tyrell have to roam the streets, suffer insults and abuse in order to be of service to Guyana.
I wish the time would come soon, very soon, when our sportsmen and women wouldn’t have to be beggars to represent our Guyana. I implore all citizens to please give generously for a good cause. Remember, we are all actors on a stage.
Yours faithfully,
B Winslow Parris
