10-member Fruta Conquerors overcame fierce rival Pele FC 2-0 when the League Finale section of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued on Wednesday at the Tucville ground.
It was an inspired team performance which exhibited the character of the hosts as they played 77 minutes with a handicap, following the sending off Okeene Fraser in the 13th minute.
Jahaal Greaves and Jermin Junior secured the vital three points with goals in the 11th and 65th minutes correspondingly. With the win, Fruta Conquerors remain in the second position while climbing to 13 points.
On the other hand, Pele remain on seven points and drop to the fifth position. Fresh off their 2-0 defeat to Slingerz, the home side got off to the perfect start as Greaves directed his header into the net from within the box, after collecting a Reshawn Sandiford cross.
However, the early momentum gathered was quickly lost two minutes later as Fraser was sent off, picking up his second bookable offence for a reckless challenge.
With the score remaining unchanged entering half time, the combination of Eon Alleyne and Jermin Junior made their presence felt as a perfectly placed flat left-side cross from the former, evaded the backline and then found the latter at the top of the box, who placed his first-time strike from the top of the box into the lower right corner.
Frustrated by the lack of service despite their numerical advantage, talisman Gregory Richardson was issued a red card for uttering indecent language towards the official.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) dismissed the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 5-1. Olvis Mitchell recorded a hat trick in the 12th, 15th and 55th minutes while Sherwin Caesar and Delroy Fraser scored in the 78th and 90th +1 minute respectively.
On target in the loss was Lennox Cort in the 51st minute. Due to the win, GDF move into the third position with 10 points.
On the other hand, GFC remain in the cellar position on one point. Upon the conclusion of the League Finale round, the top four finishers in terms of points will face off against each other in single knockout format to decide the winner of the round.
The semi-final round will commence on May 12th while the finale and third place playoff will occur on May 23rd.
The points leader will face off with the fourth-placed side while the second positioned club will tackle the third positioned unit at a venue to be announced.
Winner of the League Finale round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth- place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively.
Similarly, the points leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Finale round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
