A taxi driver died late Monday night after he hit a car he was attempting to overtake and crashed along Le Destin Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
Dead is Derron Elexey, 31, called “Spice” of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, who sustained severe head injuries in the accident, which occurred around 11.30pm.
Elexey was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police, in a statement, said investigations revealed that Elexey was driving a car along Le Destin Public Road when he attempted to overtake another vehicle but lost control and crashed.
At the time of the accident, he was returning home after a hang with his friends and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. He was the lone occupant of the car.
His father, Bertram Elexey, said he received a call on Monday night from his daughter-in-law, who informed him that his son was involved in a serious accident and was taken to the hospital.
According to the man, he immediately left for the hospital and upon arrival he was told that Derron had already died.
The grieving father said family members were still trying to gather information as to what exactly transpired but were unable to get much.
He related that the other vehicle was at the police station. He was unable to state whether anyone else was injured.
Derron Elexey is survived by his wife and two children.
