The Bloomfield/Whim community from which Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo hails saw very few votes for the governing APNU+AFC at Friday’s elections with the vast majority going to the opposition PPP/C.
According to election results provided by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday, the PPP/C secured 1,164 votes in the Bloomfield/Whim Neighbourhood Democratic Council on the Corentyne while APNU+AFC gathered only 142.
The results would buttress the view that neither Nagamootoo nor the Alliance For Change (AFC) are making an impact on votes in Whim particularly in light of the coalescing with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
In the 2011 general elections, in the Whim area, even though the PPP/C won easily, the AFC picked up a substantial month of votes. In last year’s general elections, the PPP/C clawed back some of that support when the AFC appeared on the ballot in alliance with APNU. The same thing seems to have happened in this year’s local government elections.
The margin on Friday was big in several cases. In constituency seven, the PPP/C’s Sursatee Ishmael gained 209 votes while Mavis Nagamootoo of APNU+AFC got 31 votes. In constituency six, the PPP/C’s Sewdat gathered 138 votes while APNU+AFC’s Sasenarine Ramsarran secured 31 votes.
