According to Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, the numerous audits being conducted by the present administration are nothing but political tools being used to damage the reputation of professional persons.
Speaking at a press conference held at Freedom House yesterday, Jagdeo said that rather than being usedto pursue legal cases the audits are being used to provide “red meat’ to the supporters of the ruling APNU+AFC coalition.
“My problem with the audits is that they were done in a political fashion and are not being used to pursue legal cases. If the audits conducted find irregularities or corrupt practices they should be used to support cases against individuals who they find to be corrupt,” he said.
He further said that some of the audits are so unprofessional they won’t withstand examination from the general public much less the legal fraternity. He also charged that they are being made public selectively without the right of response from the people affected.
“They are in the process of damaging reputations. They are giving their supporters red meat by attacking professional reputations. Jagdeo made specific reference to head of the Guyana Energy Agency Mahender Sharma whom he referred to as a “young bright professional”. He also referenced former head of NICIL Winston Brassington whom he said came under attack after he exposed Kaieteur News publisher Glen Lall as part owner of Guyana Stores Limited.
