President David Granger said yesterday that the celebration of Phagwah and Easter demonstrate that Guyanese are moving towards national unity.
The Head of State’s comments were made during a brief interaction with the media at the conclusion of his Easter walk in the National Park. President Granger said he is urging Guyanese to continue. “Trends are moving towards national unity [and showing] a greater appreciation for and a willingness to celebrate each other’s festivities like Phagwah and Easter and Christmas… Nobody celebrates as a one-group holiday…,” he said.
President Granger spent over an hour walking in the park and interacting with hundreds of Guyanese who were picnicking and flying kites.
He noted, “Easter is the single most sacred festival in the Christian calendar and represents the resurrection of Christ from the dead and the triumph of good over evil. Guyanese of all ethnicities, of all backgrounds observe the day of celebration.” Judging from the multitude of families gathered at the National Park, he said, it was clear that people enjoy Easter and the flying of kites.
“Ordinary people have come out and I enjoyed being with the people out here. I just want to extend Easter greetings to them,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and his wife Seeta Nagamootoo celebrated Easter in Berbice. They walked along and interacted with the thousands of Berbicians who flocked the popular Easter destination, Number 63 Beach, for kite flying and other activities.
