Former police sergeant Shawn Sandy, who it was alleged accidentally shot dredge owner Feroze Khan last Thursday whilst examining a weapon, was yesterday charged with manslaughter.
The accused was represented by attorney Mark Waldron at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, where it was alleged that on March 24, he unlawfully killed Feroze Khan at Buoy Hole, Mazaruni.
Sandy, 40, was denied bail after prosecutor Deniro Jones objected due to the gravity of the charge and the penalty it attracts.
Waldron had submitted to the court that the shooting was a tragic accident, noting that Khan and Sandy were close brothers and attended the New Mosque Jamaat in Alexander Village together, where Sandy is a resident.
He said that on the day in question, both men were in the backdam when a firearm was discovered, and as they examined the weapon, a round was released. Waldron said that the warhead passed through Sandy’s left hand and struck Khan, who succumbed to the injury.
Jones disputed the facts presented by the defence, stating that the police were in possession of a caution statement, in which the accused said the 9 mm weapon was found by him and then taken back to the camp.
Sandy was remanded to prison until April 20, when he will make his next appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
