At about 1955h on Tuesday, ranks of a mobile police patrol at East Canefield, Canje, Berbice, approached Malcolm Henry, 32 years, of Rosignol, WBB, who is known to the police.
A release from the police yesterday said that during efforts to conduct a search of his person, Henry resisted and assaulted two unarmed Rural Constables and then pulled out a knife in the continuing assault whereupon he was shot to his left foot by an armed policeman.
The release said that Henry was initially treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and referred to the GPHC where he has been admitted under guard.
The two Rural Constables were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the incident.
Henry is presently before the courts on two charges of robbery under arms and is also under investigation for two incidents of alleged rape.
On Tuesday, Henry’s family had related a different version of the shooting to Stabroek News. His mother said her son was sitting on the bench at their gate, at Lot 319 East Canefield Settlement, when a police vehicle stopped and five cops appeared and asked the man what he had in his pocket. Roxanne Prince told Stabroek News that one of the police officers then pushed her son to the vehicle and started to search his pocket. According to the woman, Henry, 26, took out his money and a lighter. The woman said that a scuffle later ensued between Henry and the police during which he was shot.
