Businessman Ganesh Gangadin was yesterday elected Mayor of Corriverton when the new 16-member council held its first meeting at the Town Hall after the recent local government elections.
Krishnand Jaichand was also elected Deputy Mayor.
They were the only nominees and were, therefore, elected unopposed.
Gangadin, who had served as a member of the Interim Management Committee for Corriverton from 2013 to 2015, told Stabroek News that one of his immediate plans is to review the town’s solid waste management programme and tweak it to have the desired result. He said that one long term plan would be to work on the expansion of the market. He stressed that they are a team of committed councillors, who are eager to serve their constituencies and community as a whole.
When asked what prompted him to run for office, he said he was always a community-oriented person and always found himself involved in various community groups and projects.
The other members of the council, who were all sworn in yesterday, are Sheik Mahmood, Pradeep Ketwaroo, Bebi Rambarran, Dhan Ramdass, Inderjit Arjoon, Deonarain Singh, Saif Ivan, Premchand Pooran, Winston Roberts, Latchmee Ramnarine-Edward, Sabitree Ally and Jamna Persad Ghamandi, Everett Harewood and Shameer Alfred,.
The council is comprised of 14 PPP/C councillors and two New Dawn Development Association councillors (Harewood and Alfred).
Before the March 18th polls, local government elections had not been held since 1994.
