Swift work by the police have led to the arrest of a man who was allegedly involved in the robbery of goldsmith Bramdat Singh Sr at the Rosignol Market on Saturday.
Police sources told Stabroek News that a few hours after the robbery occurred, ranks acted on information and made the arrest. Stabroek News understands that the suspect was retrieving the motorcycle used in the robbery when he was apprehended by the police.
Stabroek News was told that the suspect stood guard while the robbery occurred and under interrogation, admitted to being one of the planners of the robbery.
On Saturday at around 6am, Bramdat Singh Jr, called ‘Ronald,’ was helping his father who is also known as ‘Rakesh’ to open his stall at the market when they were attacked. Singh Jr was shot in his jaw by the bandits who escaped with $7 million in jewellery.
Rakesh had told Stabroek News that one of the two bandits walked straight up to him and demanded his bag full of jewellery. However, Rakesh said after he refused to let go of his bag, the second bandit shot his son in his jaw. The bag was handed over and the bandits got away with approximately $7.4 million in jewellery.
Rakesh said the men were not masked, while eyewitnesses noted that they arrived on a motorcycle. Singh Jr remains in the New Amsterdam hospital in a stable condition. Police are looking for two other suspects.
