Four candidates, all of whom are Guyanese, have been shortlisted to be interviewed for the vacant post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG). This is according to University Registrar Dr C Nigel Gravesande. In a recent interview with Stabroek News, Gravesande explained that the application process saw 20 candidates applying for the vacant post and four have been shortlisted.
He said that each of the shortlisted candidates have since been informed and arrangements are in place to have them present in Guyana during the second and third week of April to engage with the application process.
The process to be used will include a panel interview, presentation to the Academic Board, presentations to Berbice community and public lectures. A similar process was utilized in 2012 to identify a vice-chancellor. Nigerian-born professor Jacob Opadeyi was unanimously selected as vice-chancellor at the end of this process.
According to Gravesande, after this process the search committee will make a recommendation of the preferred candidate to the University Council, which, in accordance with the University Act, will approve or disapprove the recommendation.
An offer will then be made to the preferred candidate. He stressed that each shortlisted candidate is eminently qualified and suitable having previously served in the field of tertiary education.
It is expected that a new vice-chancellor will have been appointed in time for the new academic year beginning September, 2016.
