A Jamaican national, who police say was found with over a kilo of cocaine, was yesterday remanded to prison on a narcotics trafficking charge.
Alfred Wellington, 50, said to be a carpenter, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was also charged with forgery and overstating in Guyana.
It is alleged that Wellington had 1.324 kilogrammes of cocaine in his possession for trafficking on April 2nd.
He was also charged with conspiring with a person or persons unknown to forge a driver’s licence in favour of himself to show that same was issued by the Licence Revenue Department.
It was further alleged that between April 18th, 2011 and April 2nd, 2016, he failed to comply with the conditions of a permit and overstated his time in Guyana.
Wellington pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were read to him by the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.
Police had reported the arrest of the Jamaican national after ranks of the Police Narcotics Unit conducted a search on a house at Friendship Squatting Area, during which a kilogramme of cocaine, compressed in the form of shoe soles, was found.
Attorney Peter Hugh, who appeared on behalf of Wellington, told the court that the police searched his client’s home and found the drugs. He added that Wellington was taken to the lower flat of the building, where the police showed him a bag containing the drugs.
According to the attorney, Wellington denied having knowledge of the drugs and at the time it was found by the ranks he was not around.
The lawyer also claimed that police stole a quantity of cash that was in his client’s passport during the search.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers objected to bail for Wellington on the trafficking charge. He also told the court that the cocaine was found in the presence of the Wellington since he showed officers where it was located.
Jeffers also argued that Wellington, as a Jamaican national, is a flight risk.
The Chief Magistrate refused to grant bail and Wellington was remanded to prison until April 25th, when the matters would be called again before the court.
