Delon Henry, called ‘Nasty Man’ was yesterday committed to stand trial for the murder of East Ruimveldt resident Dexter Griffith.
Griffith was allegedly shot and killed by Henry in front of his ‘Warlock’ home on September 29th, 2015.
Henry was committed to stand trial at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry into the charge by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who stated that based on all the evidence presented by the prosecution a case has been made out against the defendant. It was also stated that the identification of Henry during the identification parade is one that a jury must make a ruling upon.
Henry was then committed to stand trial at the Demerara Assizes and is to remain on remand until that time.
Meanwhile, yesterday marked the commencement of Henry’s trial on charges of illegal firearm and ammunition possession and a Police Corporal testified that he had claimed he needed the gun to protect himself.
It is alleged that on October 4th, 2015, at Agricola, Henry had in his possession a .38 revolver and eight live matching rounds of ammunition.
Detective Corporal Derwin Eastman, who is stationed at the Brickdam Police Station and attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), stated that on October 4th, 2015, he was the officer who had found the gun and ammunition on Henry during a search.
Eastman further stated that after he had told the defendant of the offence he had committed and cautioned him, he was arrested and escorted to the Brickdam Police Station. It was at the station that Corporal Eastman alleges that the defendant stated, “Officer Eastman, I gat to walk with this gun to protect myself from ‘Mafia,’ ’cause he hunting me with AK-47 ’cause he seh I kill he brother.”
Corporal Eastman’s testimony was followed by Woman Police Corporal Shondell Williams, who is attached to the records office at CID, where she is performing duties in the firearm section. She testified that when she had searched the database she found that Henry was not a licensed firearm holder.
The matter was will be called again on April 14th.
