National women’s table tennis champion Chelsea Edghill and Trenace Lowe former national champion were eliminated from the 2016 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Latin American Olympic Trials in Santiago, Chile by Angela Mori and Camille Arguelles respectively.
Seeking a place in the main draw Lowe lost 1-4 to Argentina’s Arguelles while Edghill lost 3-4 to Peru’s Mori.
In the match against Argüelles, Lowe won the first game comfortably 1-5 but lost the next four games 8-11, 6-11, 3-11 and 7-11 while Edghill was up 3-1 before losing 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 9, 11, 3-11.
Both Arguelles and Mori went into the main draw along with Venezuela’s Roxy Gonzalez who made short shrift of Jamaica’s Shenique Clare winning 11-7, 11-8, 11-7, and 11-8.
In the main draw, however Gonzalez lost to top seed Adrianna Diaz, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11 and 11-2.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Rheann Chung lost 2-4 to Mercedes Madrid of Mexico 11-8, 4-11, 13-15, 11-9, 11-9, and 11-8.
Diaz and Colombia’s Lady Ruano were down to contest the final after defeating Cuba’s Lisi Castillo 4-3 and Mexico’s Yadira Silvia 4-1 respectively in the semi-finals.
In means that those two players will participate in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil later this year along with Brazil’s Caroline Kumahara and Gui Lin in the women’s singles.
Also qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games are Mexico’s Yadira Silvia and Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo who took the final two spots.
