Cricket umpire recovering from knife attack

Abina Parker, the cricket umpire who was stabbed on Sunday evening by her husband is recovering and is in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

When Stabroek News visited Parker, 44, of Kaneville East Bank Demerara yesterday in the hospital, the former national cricketer and a professional umpire was surrounded by family and friends.

She told Stabroek News that she is recovering from her injuries and would not wish to recall the night’s attack.

Parker who, sustained several stab wounds about her body including to her face, was rushed to the Diamond Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public hospital on Sunday evening.

Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred at the couple’s Kaneville home around 21:00 hrs on Sunday after they were involved in a heated argument.

A neighbour recalled hearing screams coming from the house but before the woman could have gone over to find out what was transpiring, a bloodied Parker was seen running out of the house. The couple’s 17-year-old son who was at home at the time, reportedly witnessed the attack.

Parker’s husband Melroy Parker, 47, a mechanic, committed suicide moments after he stabbed her.
