A cane harvester accused of carrying out an armed robbery on a goldsmith and his 17-year-old son on Saturday last, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Rondell Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to prison.
Bharrat Madray, 26, of Bennet Dam, Rosignol was not required to enter a plea to the charge that while armed with a gun and in the company of others, he robbed Bramdat Singh of $7.2 million in jewellery at the Rosignol Market.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Althea Solomon asked for bail to be refused, based on the gravity and nature of the offence.
Madray, whose next court date is April 21, is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Horatio Edmondson.
According to information gathered, Singh was opening his stall at the market on Saturday morning, when two men attacked and robbed him. During the robbery Singh’s 17-year-old son was shot in his jaw, by one of the alleged perpetrators, leaving the young man in the hospital for days.
Madray was not charged with the shooting, nor was it referred to in court.
