The welder who had been hospitalised following a shooting on Regent Street on Thursday last during an attempted robbery has been discharged from the hospital.
Narine Samsudeen, 28, of Parika Backdam yesterday told Stabroek News that he does not remember anything after being shot.
He told Stabroek News yesterday via phone that he has to return to the hospital for a checkup next week as one of the bullets is still lodged in the left side of his abdomen. He said the bullet is not affecting him nor is he experiencing any pain.
Samsudeen sustained two gunshot wounds, including one to his abdomen, and underwent surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) to remove the bullet. The welder remained unconscious up to Friday following an emergency surgery. He explained that although doctors have located the bullet, he was bleeding profusely and they were unable to proceed further with the surgery.
Samsudeen was discharged from the medical institution on Tuesday.
Recalling what had happened before he was shot, Samsudeen said he went with his father-in-law to purchase welding rods. He explained that after the gunman opened fire, he ran onto the truck to shield himself from the bullets but the “man see me and shoot me.”
Meanwhile, police continue to search for a person of interest based on a description they received. A source close to the investigation had told Stabroek News that investigators visited a location in Kitty twice between Thursday and Saturday but were unable to locate the suspect. A vehicle bearing a fake number plate was intercepted by the police in Kitty shortly after the incident. It is unclear if it belongs to the suspect who is currently on the run.
The shooting also left Shazam Allie, 35, a businessman of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo nursing a gunshot wound. Allie was shot once to his left leg and was rushed to the Balwant Singh Hospital where he was treated and discharged.
An eyewitness had related to this newspaper that it appeared as if the men were followed. He pointed out that the attack occurred 15 minutes after they arrived at the store. According to the man, the shooter asked for the bag with money, which Allie had, but after he ran into the store the gunman left.
Allie had told Stabroek News that he saw a silver grey vehicle pulling up after which an unmasked man with a gun fired five to seven shots in his direction. He said before he ran into the store he was shot to his left leg. The bullet exited the leg. He pointed out that he had a small amount of cash on him at the time.
