Following the recent protest action taken by students to highlight their concerns over the neglect of the University of Guyana, President David Granger has agreed to meet with representatives of the student body.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of the Presidency announced that President Granger would be meeting with the President of the University of Guyana Students Association (UGSS) and a small group from the Association next week to discuss the welfare and issues raised by students of the Turkeyen Campus over the past week.
When contacted for a comment on the proposed meeting, former UGSS President Joshua Griffith, who has been among those leading the protests, told Stabroek News that the student body will use the opportunity to present a comprehensive presentation of the problems faced by the university students as well as possible solutions.
He also expressed hopes of negotiating the possibility of government officials interacting more with the student body on a yearly basis, while noting that there is the need to have more students being a part of the decision making process regarding the university.
On Tuesday, members of the UGSS and other university students staged a protest at the Turkeyen Campus to highlight poor conditions that they say continue to be ignored.
Scores of students had assembled in the vicinity of the campus’ administration building just before midday on Tuesday to press for better learning conditions and vowed to continue to demonstrate until government intervenes.
These include the timely release of grades, improved labs facilities, functioning AC units, and accreditation of the UG medical school.
The protest continued on Wednesday in front of the Ministry of the Presidency but concluded after the body received word of President Granger’s proposal to meet and discuss their concerns.
The Ministry said logistics for the meeting are currently being worked out between the Ministry of the Presidency and the UGSS.
