Workers of the Wales Sugar Estate were joined by senior officials of the Guyana Agricultural & General Workers’ Union (GAWU) in holding a candlelight vigil last evening in front of the estate.
The vigil, which was attended by about 100, was aimed at pressuring the government to reverse its decision to close the estate later this year.
It started around 7 pm and lasted for about one hour. Gordon Thomas, one of the organizers, told Stabroek News that president David Granger can use his power to overrule the decision to close the estate for the benefit of the thousands of residents who would suffer as a result. To date, even though the closure of the estate was announced in January, no senior administration official has visited the workers.
He lamented that the situation is becoming even more frustrating because of the negative impact it would have on the economy and the lives of so many people.
He said they would continue to vent in an effort to save the estate.
