The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank who was accused of raping a Lethem teen more than a month ago is expected to face an assault charge shortly.
Stabroek News had previously reported that the incident occurred during the wee hours of February 19th at Lethem, in Region Nine, while the 16-year-old girl was making her way home after an outing. She alleged that she was raped by the serviceman, who was on duty at the time.
The girl, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, alleged that the soldier choked her and she subsequently fell unconscious.
The case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who sent it back to the police with the direction that more investigations be done.
Following this, this newspaper was told, there was not enough evidence to substantiate the rape charge and as a result it was advised that he be charged with assault.
He is expected to be charged soon.
