GTT, ministry working on network upgrades ahead of jubilee celebrations

The Ministry of Telecommunications and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) are working to ensure major upgrades to cellular networks and hot-spots in considered locations across the country in time for next month’s 50th independence anniversary celebrations.

GTT yesterday handed over a cheque for $1 million as a contribution towards the Jubilee Festival to be held as part of the independence anniversary celebrations.

Minister of Tourism and Telecommunications Cathy Hughes received the cheque from Public Relations Officer of GTT Allison Parker and other representatives of the company yesterday during a simple ceremony at Colgrain House, Camp Street, Georgetown.

The money will go towards the fashion segment of the festival, according to Hughes.  “This segment will provide an opportunity to over 22 fashion designers to present to the public, the highest standard at which our fashion industry has developed,” she said.

Hughes also said there are also constant discussions between GTT and her ministry to ensure that major upgrades to cellular networks and hot-spots in considered locations across the country are possible in time for the celebrations.

She said this is while the Telecommunications Bill is still before Parliament and is yet to be passed.

“I was disappointed that when I took this position we were still only operating on a 2G platform and we are looking to improve on that before the event. In my discussions with the telephone companies, we are looking at other avenues where we want to ensure that we create easier access, in terms of at least hotspots at key areas,” said Hughes.

Parker, in brief comments, guaranteed that the company will continue to contribute towards Guyana’s development. She said the company was continually demonstrating its understanding of its corporate social responsibility and this was reflected in its “presence and support across sectors and communities of Guyana.”

The Jubilee Festival is scheduled to be one of music, art and fashion. It will commence on May 19th and end on May 22nd.
