A businessman was abducted from his Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara (WCD) home yesterday morning but freed about an hour after when his captors realised that they had the wrong man.
Businessman Tazim Gafoor was taken from his Lot 39-40 Windsor Forest, WCD home, while he was escorting a fellow businessman, who is known as “Quartz,” into his house, at around 10am.
Gafoor has told police that he was driven to Georgetown and after enquiries were made of the kidnappers by another group, who are suspected to be associates in the act, he was freed.
The men drove away and were not apprehended up to late yesterday afternoon.
Contacted for comment, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said an investigation has been launched into the matter. Blanhum said police investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage obtained from Gafoor’s house and are also making every effort to impound vehicle that was used in the abduction.
Stabroek News understands that while Gafoor was escorted Quartz into his house, two men held onto him and pushed him into a white car, which Quartz also joined.
While in the car, the victim reportedly enquired of Quartz as to what was going on but he was told “shut up and don’t ask that man anything” by an occupant of the car.
They then drove him to Georgetown and while in the vicinity of Mandela Avenue another car pulled up alongside the vehicle. At that point, this newspaper was told, Quartz asked the occupants of the other vehicle, “This is the coolie boy y’all want?” However, one of them told him that they had the wrong person. As a result, Gafoor was put out of the car and both vehicles consisting of occupants who were neither masked nor armed drove away.
It was at this stage that Gafoor stopped a passerby and requested to make a phone call.
He contacted a close associate of his to pick him up and they then proceeded to the police station, where Gafoor gave the police a detailed a statement about what transpired.
