Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space in your columns to vent my frustration over the non-promotion of teachers for the year 2015 and also for the year 2016. It is quite unfortunate that we as teachers have to feel the brunt of this arrogance between the Guyana Teachers Union and the Teaching Service Commission. It is evident that the parties are not interested in resolving these matters. No one wants to budge not even the Ministry of Education seems to be concerned.
This foot-dragging has cost teachers their careers, their benefits and remuneration is being affected. Teachers have lost money and quite a few will be retired at the end of this school year. They will never get the opportunity to enjoy their senior position. The union is depriving these individuals from taking up these positions.
The protest by the union in front of the Teaching Service Commission is an utter disgrace and won’t ever solve the issue. The union has got to know when to draw the line as a series of lawsuits are being contemplated against the union and the Teaching Service Commission by teachers who have been left with few options.
These 200-odd teachers have been severely affected and no one seems to care and also teachers who would have expected promotions in 2016 are also affected. I call on the union and the commission to resolve this before it’s too late.
Yours faithfully,
Twahir Baksh
