Driver held over soldier’s death released on bail

The police have released the driver who was involved in the accident that claimed the life of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal Lashana Moore on station bail after he was charged with two traffic offences.

Akeem Layne, of Tucville, Georgetown was released on Monday on $100,000 station bail in relation to causing Moore’s death by dangerous driving. The probe is still ongoing and he was ordered to report to the Kitty Police Station every morning to assist with investigations.

On Monday, Layne also appeared in a city court and was charged with failing to render assistance and failing to stop after the accident. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted his release on a total of $200,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to May 13, when he is scheduled to make his next court appearance.

Moore, 22, who resided at Lot 917 Providence New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and served as a Corporal in the GDF attached to Camp Ayanganna, died on Saturday morning after she was struck down by a car driven by Layne.

The accident occurred around 5 am in the vicinity of Sheriff Taxi Service while Moore was making her way across Sheriff Street just after exiting a vehicle.

There were also unconfirmed reports that after she was struck down and was left lying on the road, Moore was run over by two other vehicles.

Layne, who was the driver of the motorcar, PMM 1278 which was involved in the accident, reportedly fled scene after the accident and was apprehended less than three hours after his vehicle was found abandoned at Freeman Street, East La Penitence.
