Residents of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo are benefiting from a facelift that members of the newly formed Community Development Committee (CDC) have embarked on.
On Sunday last, the group painted the bridge at the head of the scheme and also launched a clean-up campaign.
Chairman, Andrew Haynes told Stabroek News that the idea of fixing the bridge was to give everyone a “welcoming feeling when entering the scheme.”
He said the project was done with support from the Regional Democratic Council of Region Three as well as members of the community.
Secretary of the Non-Governmental group, Donna Snagg who is spearheading the cleaning, told this newspaper that they are also sensitising the public about proper disposal of garbage.
She said that apart from enhancing the community, one of the main objectives of the exercise was to minimise the influx of mosquitos thus reducing the risk of diseases.
The group would also be responsible for drainage and maintaining of the roads along with social intervention with regards
to domestic and child abuse and suicide.
It would also be providing support for the security sector to keep the community safer.
The group has also started an upgrading exercise for the sports ground and has already ploughed and slashed the field.
It also intends to establish a multi-purpose centre, which would house a computer school, library and day care facility.
Snagg said the initiative is open to all residents regardless of political affiliation and she encouraged them to “come on board and join with the development” so the community “can look like Miami.”
Also part of the campaign was the founder of the Guyana Acrobatic Group, John Allicock.
