A 46-year-old West Bank Demerara (WBD) resident lost his life on Friday evening when he was run over by a car while reportedly lying on the roadway.
He has been identified by the police as Patraj Basdeo of Sisters Village, WBD.
The incident occurred around 20:55 hrs on Friday on the public road in Sisters Village.
The police said in a press release that Basdeo was allegedly lying on the road when he was run over by a motor vehicle.
He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Acting Traffic Chief Budnarine Persaud yesterday confirmed that the driver had been arrested and was currently in police custody.
A breathalyzer test was conducted, which proved that he was above the legal limit of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Several efforts to contact the family of the dead man proved futile.
According to a source, Basdeo was lying on the road with his head facing out when the vehicle reportedly smashed his head.
It was unclear whether he was also under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Investigations are ongoing.
