City Hall yesterday began installing permanent garbage receptacles along Regent and Charlotte streets between King Street and Avenue of the Republic.
The new garbage containers are being installed in the place of the green plastic receptacles that had been placed along Regent Street from Avenue of the Republic to Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.
According to the city’s Solid Waste Director Walter Narine those replace garbage bins were subject to vandalism and theft. He said the city had installed 43 of the receptacles but only 13 remain.
He explained that the new design of the bin is sturdier and more secure. These bins are steel frame and are cemented to the ground. A basket will be placed inside the steel frame and secured by a lock. Narine explained that any type of solid waste can be thrown in the new receptacles but pointed out that they should not be used for bulk garbage. He called on businesses in the area where they are being installed to overlook them.
According to Narine, the city plans to expand the placing the new receptacles to Carmichael, Church, Waterloo and Camp streets. He disclosed that the cost per receptacle is $25,000 with installation. He said businesses are welcome to be a part of the initiative.
