The man who was wanted by the police in connection with the abduction of businessman Tazim Gafoor, which occurred almost two weeks ago, turned himself into the police yesterday.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that Winston Sherlock Wade, called ‘Quarters,’ turned himself in at the Leonora Police Station yesterday in the company of his lawyer. He is currently in police custody.
Last Thursday, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Wade, of Lot 59 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice and Lot 25 Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara. He was wanted for questioning into the relation to the abduction of Gafoor.
Gafoor was taken from his Lot 39-40 Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara home on the morning of April 9 around 10 while he was reportedly escorting Wade into his house. He was freed about an hour after when his captors realised that they had the wrong man.
The men had driven him to Georgetown and while in the vicinity of Mandela Avenue another car pulled up alongside the vehicle. At that point, this newspaper was told that ‘Quarters’ asked the occupants of the other vehicle if Gafoor was the person they were looking for. However, one of them told him that they had the wrong person. As a result, Gafoor was put out of the car and both vehicles drove away.
