Dear Editor,
The issue of the tardy and non-payment of the salaries of part-time lecturers at the Government Technical Institute needs to be urgently addressed.
For the year 2016, part-time lecturers have only been paid for one week in January this means that they have not been in receipt of salaries for the months of February and March, 2016.
This begs the questions: (1) How are they able to support themselves and families? (2) How can they efficiently deal with their financial obligations?
It is to be noted that this is not the first instance that this has occurred. There was non-payment of salaries on previous occasions including a Christmas period.
In addition, when salaries are clustered together for payment, the taxation is not pro- rated thus the payment of tax is high as a result of this erroneous method of computation.
Fourthly, part-time lecturers’ salaries have not been reviewed for years. So for example, when public servants receive a five percent increase, they are not so considered.
I trust that should the officials concerned be made aware of how committed public servants are treated, this matter would be dealt with expeditiously.
Yours faithfully,
